On January 30, 1979, a Varig Boeing 707 cargo plane took off from Narita International Airport in Tokyo, Japan, en route to Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. The flight was unremarkable at the outset, loaded with a typical cargo of electronics, machinery, and perishable goods. However, what made this flight particularly unique was the inclusion of a collection of 50 paintings by Japanese-Brazilian artist Manabu Mabe that were valued at over a million dollars onboard.
At around 20 minutes into the flight, the crew contacted Narita tower for a routine check-in and said they were about 300 miles from the Japanese coast. However, when it came time for the next check around 40 minutes later, there was nothing but radio silence from the crew. The flight had also inexplicably vanished from radar screens. Controllers in the tower tried for an hour to contact the aircraft before declaring an emergency. The Navy and Air force was dispatched to look for the plane. They searched for eight days but found no wreckage or signs of the crew. 
Theories and Speculations
Various theories have emerged over the years, attempting to explain the disappearance of the Varig Flight 967. Some suggest that the cargo plane may have fallen victim to a hijacking, with the thieves making off with the precious cargo of paintings. Another theory was that the plane had possibly made its way into Soviet airspace and was shot down, just like Korean Airlines flight 902 a year earlier.
There is also a wild conspiracy theory that involves the potential of a dismantled MiG-25 aircraft aboard along with the paintings. There is speculation that parts of an advanced Soviet Union aircraft were aboard Varig Flight 967, and that the Soviet Union intercepted the Boeing 707 and forced it to land somewhere in Russia.
Others believe that the aircraft might have crashed in a remote area of the ocean, making recovery impossible – The likely outcome agreed upon by experts.

On January 29, 1963, tanker truck driver John William "Pete" Trudelle was transporting 4,600 gallons of gasoline from Boston to Keene, New Hampshire. At an intersection in Saugus, Massachusetts, he collided with a car waiting for a school bus. The impact caused a massive explosion, killing Trudelle and the car's driver, Robert Mayer. Miraculously, the six children and bus driver managed to escape the bus just seconds before it erupted in flames, with the heat even warping the overpass's steel girders. Urban legend says that Trudelle still resides on that road, picking up hitchhikers.

Supernatural Shipwrecks: SS Edmund Fitzgerald
The SS Edmund Fitzgerald, often referred to simply as the Edmund Fitzgerald, was a renowned American Great Lakes freighter. The ship's haunting reputation is due to a tragic maritime disaster that occurred on November 10, 1975, on Lake Superior. Commonly called the “Titanic of the Great Lakes,” the Edmund Fitzgerald sailed with the SS Arthur M. Anderson ship, another cargo ship. Terrible weather conditions caused waves to engulf the Edmund Fitzgerald, ultimately sinking it into the lake.

The SS Edmund Fitzgerald was a massive, 729-foot-long freighter, one of the largest ships on the Great Lakes during its time. Built in 1958, it was primarily used to transport iron ore pellets from mines in the upper Midwest to steel mills in the Great Lakes region. The ship was known for its impressive cargo capacity and efficiency, making it a crucial part of the regional freight transportation system.
The Haunting Reputation
The haunting reputation of the SS Edmund Fitzgerald stems from its tragic sinking. However, the ship was not previously without incident. On September 6, 1969, it ran aground near the Soo Locks in Sault Sainte Marie, Michigan, resulting in both internal and external damage to the vessel. Then, on April 30, 1970, it collided with the S.S. Hochelaga. In less than five months, on September 4, 1970, the ship sustained further damage when it struck a lock wall. Subsequently, on January 7, 1974, the ship lost its bow anchor in the vicinity of Belle Isle in the Detroit River.
On the fateful night of November 10, 1975, the ship was caught in a severe storm with hurricane-force winds and waves reaching up to 35 feet. Distress calls were sent, but the ship ultimately disappeared, taking all 29 crew members on board down with it. The crew of the Anderson searched the ship, but found no sign of survivors. The wreckage was discovered the following year on the lake's bottom, broken in two.
Numerous theories and investigations have attempted to unravel the circumstances leading to the disaster, but it remains one of the most famous and tragic shipwrecks in Great Lakes history.
The Aftermath
In 1976, the ship and its crew were forever memorialized by singer Gordon Lightfoot in his ballad, "The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald." Subsequently, on July 4, 1995, the ship's substantial 200-pound brass bell was successfully retrieved from the wreckage, and it is now proudly exhibited at the Great Lakes Shipwreck Museum located at Whitefish Point in Paradise, Michigan. In 2006, as an added measure to safeguard the integrity of the wreck site, the Canadian government made amendments to the Ontario Heritage Act, extending the protective perimeter surrounding the Edmund Fitzgerald to 500 meters. This move was enforced to discourage unauthorized diving, imposing a substantial $1 million (Canadian) fine on violators.
The SS Edmund Fitzgerald was a critical component of the regional supply chain. Like many other freighters, it played a significant role in transporting raw materials, such as iron ore, which were essential for the steel industry.
